Helen Gym
Elected in 2016, Philadelphia City Councilmember Helen Gym has been a driving force for a transformative municipal policy that has reshaped what’s possible in local government. Helen is a former public school teacher and community organizer who has helped catalyze a $500 million infrastructure campaign for modernizing public schools, expanded labor rights and protections like advance scheduling for over 130,000 hourly workers, and who has led one of the most successful eviction prevention programs in the country, reducing evictions by over two-thirds in what was once one of the highest evicting cities in the nation. Her work has earned praise from the Biden White House and a national award from EMILY’s List. She is the past national co-chair of Local Progress, a network of more than 1400 local elected officials leading racial and economic justice policies through municipal offices.
